Even with today’s advanced safety and technology systems, things can still go wrong when you’re out on the road. One of the worst situations you can find yourself in is driving in the middle of traffic when your brakes fail. This doesn’t mean certain doom though. We here at Muller Toyota have a few tips on getting to the side of the road safely.
- Get Out of Traffic Obviously sitting in the middle of a busy highway isn’t the ideal place to lose your braking power. The last thing you want to do is swerve directly to the side of the road though. You’re more than likely to cause an accident that way. Instead, remain calm, turn on your emergency lights, and slowly navigate through each lane individually.
- Don’t Turn Off the Car Whatever you do, leave the car on until you’ve stopped completely. Cutting the power might sound like a fantastic way to slow down, but it has its downsides as well. Cutting the power to the engine also cuts power to your power steering. Without power steering, reacting to the situation and navigating out of traffic is a much more difficult task to accomplish.
- Call or Signal for Help If you have a phone on your person, call a friend or tow truck. If you don’t have a phone, flag down a passing highway patrol vehicle. Walking on the side of the highway is safer than getting back behind the wheel and heading home in a car without brakes.
